Re: Davood Bagheri (David Baghleri), the Iranian detained political refugee in Edirne
Please accept my regards on behalf of the Bureau for Defense of Refugees (BDR) and “Campaign to save Davood Bagheri”.
I would like to inform you that Mr. Davood Bagheri (David Baghleri) was arrested by the police in Istanbul on 6th April 2008 and is currently detained in Adreneh prison. Davood Bagheri is an Iranian political activist and a student activist who took part in protests during December 2007 student events. I would like to pay your attention to the following. The month of December witnessed one of the most violent clashes between progressive student’s movement against the Islamic regime of Iran and the Iranian authorities. An extensive protest in defense of human rights in Iran took place and is still continuing. The organizers of these protests were radical and Left students of most universities in Iran. They demanded the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. Unfortunately most students were arrested and severely tortured physically and mentally. The whereabouts of some of the arrested is unknown. Please note that one of the student activists Ibrahim Lotfallahi was killed as the result of torture he was inflicted by the Iranian regime. The fact is that only a hand full of the student activists managed to flee Iran. Davood Bagheri is one of them who are currently persecuted by the Iranian secret service.
It has been more than 4 months since Davood (David) was imprisoned in Edirne prison. According to news reached our office, following his severe conditions and harsh treatment in prison, Mr. Bagheri committed suicide but is still alive. He was taken to hospital but was soon returned to prison. Mr. Bagheri is a political opposition figure against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and a student activist who took part in protests during December 2007 student events. To protest against his detention and the mal treatment inflicted on him by the Turkish authorities, he went on hunger strike on 10th July to 22nd July, davood has only been drinking water for all this time and is physically and psychologically suffering.
So far “Campaign to save Davood Bagheri” has publicized his plight and demands internationally and there is a massive solidarity movement running by human rights organizations all over the world for Davood Bagheri’s release (please see www.save-davoodbagheri.blogfa.com )
Bureau for Defence of Refugees (BDR) is deeply concerned about the plight of Mr. Davood Bagheri in Turkey and expects Turkish Ministry Office in Ankara to take appropriate and immediate actions to free Davood Bagheri.
Our office strongly believes that he should be freed immediately and given asylum status in a third safe country. We continue our work till his release and acceptance of his refugee status in a third safe country.
